A Ramp To Freedom

Bobbie Ray and Johney Gibson, both in their early 80s,have been dependent on their son, Don, to carry them up and down the stairs to their mobile home in Gardnerville. That is, until they reached out to NNCIL, and we were able to work with them to build an aluminum ramp that allows them to use their wheelchair. Don, age 53, may appreciate this new addition the most. “I broke my hip and I have pins in my left arm,” he says. “Lifting them and carrying them wasn’t easy.”

Bobbie Ray and Johnie will celebrate their 63rd wedding anniversary in January.

He says that the wheelchair is a lot easier to navigate and he appreciates the help his family has received. “I’ve been living with, and taking care of, my parents for about five years and the ramp definitely makes coming and going easier on my back and hips,” he said. “We’re very grateful to NNCIL for helping us.”

NNCIL supplied the ramp through our Minor Home Modification Program, which provides local consumers with a safe and accessible home environment. Services include installation of ramps, grab bars, door widening and handrails.

“This is the reason why I come to work every day at NNCIL,” said Daniel Salas [CHAP] Community Home Access ProgramĀ  and IL Specialist. “Providing these ramps, and other services for people with disabilities, can make the difference in their quality of life and independence.”
